Designer to Know: Digs Design Company
2024
In a recent interview with Chairish, Jocelyn Chiappone, founder of Digs Design Co., discusses her journey from corporate America to establishing a renowned interior design firm. After a successful career at Eastman Kodak, Chiappone relocated to Rhode Island, took time off to raise her children, and later pursued her passion for design by attending the Rhode Island School of Design. Over a decade ago, she founded Digs Design Co., which has since flourished, now operating from a historic 1787 building in Newport's historic district.
Chiappone emphasizes the importance of incorporating sentimental or cherished pieces into her designs, stating, "Having sentimental or cherished pieces is essential to making a house a home." She enjoys reupholstering or repurposing clients' items, believing that vintage pieces with unique histories enrich a space and serve as engaging conversation starters.
Her design philosophy includes mixing styles, periods, and finishes to create dramatic and unique statements. For instance, pairing a burlwood dresser with mid-century Murano lamps adds an unexpected flair to a room. Chiappone also highlights the significance of a strong color scheme to unify diverse elements, achieving what she describes as the "signature Digs mix."
When advising clients on personalizing their spaces, Chiappone encourages them to acquire art and collectibles they love, even if accumulated over time. She finds inspiration in working with clients' special collections, such as oyster plates or McCoy pottery, as these items add depth and individuality to the design.
Chiappone's approach to design is characterized by a harmonious blend of classic sophistication and personal touches, resulting in timeless interiors that reflect her clients' unique stories and tastes.
